Need your advice...

Let me start with a little backstory:

My sister and I had a good friend when we were in elementary school. I think we met her through Kindercare, but we could have met her at the Wychwood Pool that was right across the street from our house. Do you remember, sis?

Anyway, I just loved this girl's name and have always had it in the back of my mind as a possibility for a name if I ever had a girl.

Fastforward to 2005.

A couple in our Sunday School class had a little girl toward the end of the year and named her this very same name (of course, our choices for middle names are quite different).

Now, I still love this name and it's top on our list of girl names.

Here's the question (with the assumption we're having a girl. This is all moot if we have a boy!):

Is there any harm in naming our girl the same name as this other couple's daughter? It's not like we're copying and no one knows what names we're thinking about (except my parents and sis). And, it's not some kooky name either. It was in the Social Security's top 100 list for 2003 and 2004, so it's likely that she will share the name with still more people.

What do you think?

Name your child whatever name you like. If this other little girl was a relative, then I guess it might make me think twice, but just someone you go to church with, no big deal.

No one owns a name. I think it would be different if you were good friends with the couple with the child of the same name, but if you aren't then any name is up for grabs!

Only two comments and you're already making me feel better about it!

We have fairly good friends who have a daughter named Caroline, but before she was born, I was chatting with my friend via email, and I told her that if we had a girl next time around, we were going to name her Caroline. I had no idea that's what they were naming their daughter. We both agreed that we didn't "own" the name (same thing - we'd have had different middle names too) and it would not be a problem to have two little Carolines running around, even among friends.

Of course, we're having a boy, so it is a moot point for us. Go ahead and name your baby whatever you like!! (Well, maybe not Eggwyn or something!)

I agree. Besides, this is the name they are stuck with, so you want it to be the name you really want. You only get to name them once!

No one owns a name! And frankly, because I know you soooo well, if you don't name the little peb "that name" then you will always connect the new name with the "wish-I-would-have" name. No need for that stress...we already have too much as it is.

And anyway, your middle name choice is way cooler than theirs could ever be! I ga-ron-tee! (I've been thinking about Paw Paw and G-mother all morning!)

How about you name your darling child after a combination of the first letter of our first names in our family...your child could therefor be...

(not exactly sure how you sound that out...)
